v0.7.1
This page will define important terms used thorughout this manual. Terms are presented in alphabetical order.
3KeyMaster: The simulation software developed by Curtiss Wright. This is currently supported by GOAT for the Transmission and Combined Cycle simulators.
Accomplishment: A specifc milestone in the training scenario that gets marked as complete when certain actions are performed.
Action String: A string of text generated whenever the user performs an action, such as Checked:Leopard. Compared with Violation triggers to see if the violation should be activated. See Action Types for descriptions of possible action strings.
After-Action Report (AAR): A presentation shown to the trainee after ending a training scenario. Summarizes the trainee's actions and presents questions to ask them where they went wrong.
Antirequisite: If an object lists an accomplishment as an antirequisite, that object can only be activated if the accomplishment has not been completed.
Assessment: A record of a specific action taken by a trainee during a scenario. Contains information about the action, when it occurred, and which violation was triggered (if any).
Attempt: A specific instance of the trainee running the scenario. Represents the actions they took and the questions they answered. Viewed on the Statistics page.
Check: A trigger that monitors a specific numeric value in the simulation, and watches for it to enter a certain range.
Coaching Step: A set of hints that are displayed when the trainee clicks the Coaching button in the simulator. As Accomplishments are completed, different steps may be selected and thus different hints may be displayed.
Comment: A small amount of text left on an object in a scenario, used to coordinate updates with collaborators. See Collaboration.
Communication: A message and response pair sent by the trainee to some contact that co-operates the grid. Used by GOAT's communication module.
Completion Criteria: The general type of action required to complete an accomplishment.
Course: A colleciton of related scenarios that can share certain information or media.
Course Editor: The page of the CMS that allows accounts to modify training scenarios. See Course Editor.
Editor: A staff account that has been invited to edit a course. See Collaboration.
Field: A textbox or other element of a form on the Course Edit Page that allows instructors to input information. See Input Field Types for an exhaustive list of input fields and guides on how to use them.
Generator: An object in the simulation that generates power. Can be adjusted to modify how much power it generates, how quickly it updates generation rate, or if it should modify its generation rate automatically. Relevant in the Transmission and Combined Cycle simulators.
GOAT: Grid Operator Assessment Training software. Connects to the Simulator to track trainee actions and provide functionality for coaching and communications.
Hint: A short sesction of text presented to the trainee when they request coaching. Provided by a Coaching Step.
Oneline: In the transmission simulation, the station diagram pages where the trainee can view detailed information about power flowing through that station.
Plugin: The specific piece of software that allows GOAT to interface with a different simulator. Provides functionality to connect to that simulator and defines the relevant entities, action types, accomplishment criteria, and check targets.
Question: Content presented to the trainee during the After-Action Report. Corresponds to some violation that was committed during training. Contains a question for the trainee to answer, an expert's answer to the same question, and lists of images, to ensure the trainee has enough information to lurn what they did wrong.
Scenario: A specific situation that arises on the grid. Trainees must diagnose the problem and take actions to resolve it safely and efficiently.
Scoring: The process of assigning Violations to actions performed by the trainee if the action is in violation of good practice.
Simulator: The simulator software the trainee uses, which GOAT connects to, reads actions from, and possibly provides extra functionality to. GOAT supports several different simulators.
Situational Awareness (SA): This refers to the trainee gaining understanding of the state of the grid after starting a scenario.
Skip Violation: A specific type of Violation that uses the Skipped action type combined with Accomplishments to detect when the trainee misses an important step.
Solution Target: A selection of generators that the trainee is expected to take most actions on in a given scenario. Violation triggers and accomplishment requirements can target actions based on their effects on solution target generators or on non-solution target generators.
Requirement: A specific action under the general Completion Criteria
Prerequisite: If an object lists an accomplishment as a prerequisite, that object can only be activated if the accomplishment has been completed.
Trainee: The training power grid operator. Attempts training scenarios to practice solving real-world problems.
Trigger: The string of text that a violation uses to determine when it has been activated. The trigger is compared to Action Strings, and activates the violation if a match is found.
Validation: The automated process of checking for errors in a scenario. Validation must be run before a scenario can be published and run by trainees.
Violation: Defines a specific mistake the trainee could perform during a scenario. If its Trigger is activated, the violation's associated question may appear in the After-Action Report.
